Tobias Greenhalgh performing staged of Schubert's Winterreise

$

American barihunk Tobias Greenhalgh, who joined the ensemble the Young Ensembleof theTheater an der Wien last year, will be performing in the premiere of a newly staged version of Schubert's Winterreise.

Czech choreographer Martin Dvorak has conceived the 2-part song cycle for baritone, a dancer/actor and pianist, who will be Marcin Kabaghe. The initial performance will be on Saturday, October 17th, with three additional shows in the Czech Republic in December. On December 17 and 18, it will be performed at the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno, with an additional performance scheduled in Prague on October 19.

The songs represent the voice of the poet as the lover, and form a distinct narrative and dramatic sequence. In the course of the cycle the poet, whose beloved now fancies someone else, leaves his beloved's house secretly at night, quits the town and follows the river and the steep ways to a village. Having longed for death, he is at last reconciled to his loneliness. The cold, darkness, and barren winter landscape mirror the feelings in his heart, and he encounters various people and things along the way which form the subject of the successive songs during his lonely journey. It is in fact an allegorical journey of the heart.

Tickets, which are only 10,00 EUR, are available online.

Greenhalgh is currently appearing as Littore in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea at Theater an der Wien with Jennifer Larmore as Ottavia, Christophe Dumaux as Ottone and the Valer Sabadus as Nerone.

He'll be back in the U.S. in January to sing Moralès in Bizet's Carmen with the Palm Beach Opera. Also in the cast are Rinat Shaham as Carmen, Zachary Nelson as Escamillo and Riccardo Massi as Don Josè. The production will be directed by the sensational young director John De Los Santos. Tickets are available online.

Alessio Arduini
Last month we posted about the Opéra national de Paris' barihunk quartet in Mozart's Don Giovanni, which featured Artur Ruciñski in the title role, Alessio Arduini as Leporello, Fernando Radó as Masetto and Alexander Tsymbalyuk as the Commendatore.

Pietro Di Bianco as Thoas at the Paris Opera (left)
It fairly common to see barihunk trios and, occasionally quartets, in Don Giovanni, but Rossini's Barber of a Seville is a different matter. Leave it to the Opéra national de Paris to assemble three of opera's hottest barihunks for their all-star Barber of a Seville featuring Lawrence Brownlee as Almaviva and Pretty Yende as Rossini. They have brought back Alessio Arduini as Figaro, Ildar Abdrazakov as Basilio and Pietro Di Bianco as Fiorello to fill the low voice roles.

The production opens on February 2 and runs through March 4. Tickets are available online.

Ildar Abdrazakov sings La Calunnia from the Barber of Seville:

Alessio Arduini's current schedule included two roles in Puccini's La bohème, as he takes on Marcello in La bohème in Vienna beginning November 7, 2015 and Schaunard at The Met beginning April 5, 2016. He will rotate Schaunard with two other barihunks, as Alexey Lavrov opens the opera on November 23 and David Pershall takes over on January 6.

Ildar Abdrazakov is currently at The Met singing Henry VIII in Donizetti's Anna Bolena. In December, he'll sing the title role in Verdi's Attila at the Marinsky Theater.

Matthew Morris
Matthew Morris will be joining the Brooklyn New Music Collective for  for an evening of song cycles, most of them performed for the first time ever. The concert will feature world premieres from James Kallembach, Glen Roven and Roger Stubblefield, plus songs from James Matheson and Steven Gerber. There will be a reception with wine after the show.

Glen Roven told us that his "Four Surreal Songs" were inspired by a visit to the Helly Nahmad Gallery where they were exhibiting a show of surrealist painters -- Jean Arp, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, Yves Tanguy and Max Ernst. The catalog featured poems by Paul Éluard in English translations, which Roven decided to set to music.

The October 16th performance will be at the Old Stone House in Brooklyn. Tickets are available online.

Also, don't forget about Morris' upcoming performance as Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni with New York's newest and highly innnovative opera company, Venture Opera.

He'll be joined by Philip Cutlip in the title, Eric Downs as Leporellod and Christian Zaremba will sing the Commendatore. The perfect Barihunk Quartet!

Venture Opera's production of Mozart's Don Giovanni casts the serial seducer as a Catholic priest who abuses his power to have his way with women. Taking place in one of the oldest surviving gothic-revival religious buildings in New York, the adaptation revolves around the theological question of the Act of Contrition.

Performances will be on November 6, 8 and 10 at the Angel Orensanz Foundation in the heart of the Lower East Side. Tickets and additional cast information are available online.

David McFerrin
Barihunk David McFerrin will play The Officer in Boston Lyric Opera's performance of Philip Glass’ In the Penal Colony at the Cyclorama at Boston Center for the Arts from November 11-15, 2015. The production will be directed by the innovative R. B. Schlather and also features tenor Neal Ferreira as the The Visitor and Yury Yanowsky as The Soldier.

In the Penal Colony is a one-act, three-character chamber opera, which Glass dubbed a “pocket opera” for its small cast and musical ensemble. In the Penal Colony is in English and plays out in 16 scenes and features a libretto by Rudy Wurlitzer.

The opera is based on the 1914 Franz Kafka short story: a pitch-black fable about crime and a very unusual punishment.  In the Penal Colony tells the story of The Officer and The Visitor -- and an ominous machine designed to punish prisoners for their crimes. The opera debuted in 2000 at ACT Theater in San Francisco in a co-production with Chicago’s Court Theater. It premiered in New York City the following year and has subsequently had several productions in Europe and Australia, but hasn’t been seen in the U.S. for 14 years.

This isn't Boston Lyric Opera's first foray into Glass' operas, as they produced a highly popular version of his Akhnaten in 1999.

Mirco Palazzi singing Assur in Marseilles and Bordeaux

Mirco Palazzi
Italian barihunk Mirco Palazzi is reprising the role of Assur in Rossini's Semiramide with Opéra de Marseille through October 27th with Jessica Pratt in the title role. He'll take up the role again in March 2016 with the thrilling soprano Leah Crocetto in the title role.

Semiramide was Rossini's final Italian opera before moving to Paris, where he went on to write Il viaggio a Reims, Le siège de Corinthe, Moïse et Pharaon, Le comte Ory and Guillaume Tell.

By the late 1800s, Semiramide had virtually disappeared from the repertoire. However, it was chosen in 1880 to inaugurate the Teatro Costanzi, new venue of the Rome Opera House, and appeared as part of the Cincinnati Opera Festival in 1882, which was attended by Oscar Wilde. The opera virtually disappeared after 1895, until a German language revival in Rostock in 1932 and a performance under the baton of Tullio Serafin at the Maggio Musicale in 1940.

Perhaps the most famous exponent of Assur in the last half century has been Samuel Ramey.

Sherrill Milnes' VOICE Programs is presenting the one-act opera Alice Ryley based on the famous Savannah, Georgia ghost of Wright Square. The opera was written by composer Michael Ching and will be performed in English on October 30th at 4 PM. It will feature barihunk Jim Wright in the role of Richard White. 80-year-old legend Sherrill Milnes will play the role of the tour guide.

Legend has it that Alice and her purported lover, Richard White, worked as indentured servants assigned to William Wise—a crotchety disgraced aristocrat who had manipulated his passage to the New World, where he homesteaded a cattle farm on Hutchinson Island.  Among the servants’ many duties was bathing the sickly Wise and washing his long, greasy hair.  Fed up with their demeaning tasks, Alice and Richard strangled Wise with his own lackluster locks before drowning him.  They were captured before they could escape through the marsh.  The two were jailed and later hanged at the gallows in Wright Square—but not before Alice gave birth to a baby boy.
