John Paul Huckle: Mr. May 2015 in our Barihunks Charity Calendar (with Cyril Rovery & Jason Duika)
A welcome new addition to our Barihunks Charity Calendar this year is the American bass John Paul Huckle, hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is featured in the month of May with fellow barihunks Cyril Rovery and Jason Duika as guys who all have great chest voices (ok, great chests).
''I believe the Barihunks association to be a great tool for branching out and putting the lower voice first. So often it's all about the soprano or tenor. Barihunks puts us baritones and basses in the limelight for a change," said John Paul Huckle. "I am pleased to have taken  part of the ''Barihunks'' calendar as it is something that will eventually fund a competition for the baritone and bass voices and fund other projects as well featuring low males voices.''
Huckle has become a regular at the Teatro Carlo Felice where this season he has performed Cesare Angelotti in Tosca, Dansker in Billy Budd, Zuniga in Carmen and the Marchese d'Obigny in La traviata. He's currently singing Pietro in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra in a cast that includes fellow barihunk Ricardo Crampton. In May, he'll sing Cirillo in Giordano's Fedora.

John Paul Huckle sings Some Enchanted Evening:

The October 31st performance of Simon Boccanegra will be live-streamed from the Teatro Carlo Felice and available for viewing online at 3:10 PM . The opera will be conducted by Stefano Ranzani and feature Naoyuki Okada as Gabriele Adorno, Benedetta Torre as Amelia and Mansoo Kim in the title role.

Huckle studied at Boston University Opera before completing his Master of Music at the Indiana Univerisity where he studied with the legendary bass Giorgio Tozzi. At Indiana University he performed the Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Pistola in Falstaff, Friar Laurence in Roméo et Juliette, Hobson in Peter Grimes, Sarastro in The Magic Flute, Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro and the Count Des Grieux in Manon.

He went on to hone his skills at young artist programs at the Central City Opera, Tulsa Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Opera North, Brevard Music Center, and the Sarasota Opera. While at Sarasota Opera, he received the distinguished Leo Rogers Outstanding Apprentice award.

In 2007, he made his professional debut as Sparafucile in Verdi's Rigoletto with the Cleveland Opera. Since the 2010-2011 season, he has been singing in major European houses including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro Verdi in Pisa and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.

Seth Carico's "must read" post on fitness in opera

Seth Carico(Photo © Simon Pauly)
Seth Carico has just posted a piece on his Facebook feed which is a must read for everyone. He talks about his journey from being overweight and getting winded walking up stairs to learning how to breathe and sing better after losing weight.

We first encountered Carico in 2010 when he was singing Martín's Before Night Falls at the Fort Worth Opera with fellow barihunk Wes Mason. To put it politely, he looked like a well-fed military dictator, but a year later he was a fit and popular feature in our calendar.

Seth Carico in ORESTEIA
"I want to talk more about the real issue of fitness in our opera world. There is too much fighting going on about the effects of fitness in our business, and I wish we could move past it and focus on what’s important about this issue: health."
He is currently singing Leporello in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, which opens today. The cast includes fellow barihunk Davide Luciano in the title role, Aurelia Florian as Donna Anna, Jana Kurocova as Donna Elvira, Matthew Newlin as Don Ottavio (who has also gone through an amazing transformation), Alexandra Hutton as Zerlina, Andrew Harris as Masetto and Tobia Kehrer as the Commendatore. Additional performances are on November 1 and 12.
"Most of the overweight people make the argument that if one loses too much weight, he or she will not be able to breathe properly anymore, and the voice will suffer...I had to relearn how to breathe with a new body, and trust me, that is damned difficult! But, when you are healthy overall and then take the time to adjust your concept of breathing, a new world is there for you."
Some upcoming roles for Carico at the Deutsche Oper Berlin include Biterolf in Wagner's Tannhäuser, Dr Dulcamara in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore and Zuniga in Bizet's Carmen. In 2017, he will make his role debut as Gunther in Wagner's epic Der Ring des Nibelungen (and the Barihunks team will be there!).

Carico is featured in both March and November in our 2016 Barihunks calendar, which is available by clicking on the Lulu link below.

(Re) Introducing barihunk Jake Alan Nelson

Jake Alan Nelson and Brutus(Photo on left: Jiyang Chen)
We first posted about barihunk Jake Alan Nelson when we mentioned him in a piece about a trio of barihunks in The Marriage of Figaro at Juilliard. The cast included Szymek Komasa and Theo Hoffman, but we never really properly introduced the  Dallas, Texas native to readers.

Jake is currently a fourth-year undergraduate studying with the great baritone and coach Sanford Sylvan. He transferred to The Juilliard School from Collin College, and he has experience in several areas of the theatre. While performing various theatre and musical theatre roles, he also worked as a scenic carpenter and sound technician in the North Dallas area for eight years.

Next month, Jake will be performing in the undergraduate opera program of Ives and Britten songs paired with Ravel's one-act opera L'enfant et les sortilèges. Jorge Parodi will conduct the singers and members of the Juilliard Orchestra, but the performance is by invitation only.

This past summer he was involved with the Arts Fusion Initiative. Their project, Into the Sun, combined multiple art forms with the text of A True Account of Talking to the Sun on Fire Island by American poet, Frank O'Hara.

This year, he has been awarded the Dr. Gary Portadin Scholarship and the Philippa Leeds Scholarship.

Introducing bari-hunkentenor Garrison Carpenter

Garrison Carpenter
We post a lot about Seagle Music Colony and love our annual feature of the low voice men sporting their barihunk tee shirts, which you can see HERE and HERE. Somehow we missed Garrison Carpenter, who dubs himself a bari-tenor, so that makes him a bari-hunkentenor.

At Seagle he's performed in both West Side Story and Side by Side by Sondheim. His performances prompted Mark Frost of the Glens Falls Chronicle to write, "You never know when somebody you see at Seagle might hit the big time. It seems to me Garrison might.”

Carpenter is an Actor Equity member, who recently earned his master’s degree in vocal performance from Florida State University. He lives in Philadelphia and has worked at many theaters in the northeast. His recent roles include Billy in Anything Goes at the Broadway Theater of Pitman and the title role in The Who’s Tommy at the Media Theater in Pennsylvania.

From November 18-January 3, he'll be appearing as Tony in Elton John's Billy Elliot at The Media Theater. Tickets are available online.

Other roles include Hosie in Carlisle Floyd’s Cold Sassy Tree, Guglielmo in Mozart's Cosí fan tutte, featured soloist in Bach’s Weihnachts-Oratorium with the Florida State University Chamber Choir. Dickon in The Secret Garden, Radames in Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida, Jamie in The Last Five Years and Bill Calhoun in Kiss me Kate.

Chris Herbert performing Winterize (and more Schubert)

Chris Herbert performing Winterize
Barihunk Christopher Dylan Herbert encored his unique performance of his participatory version of Franz Schubert’s 1828 song cycle Winterreise at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. He recently released a video highlight of the performance. Appropriately dubbed Winterize, since it's performed outside in the cold New York winter, the piece reimagines Schubert's WINTERREISE for baritone and transistor radios.

Performed in collaboration with Make Music New York, the audience holds the accompaniment playing through the radios as they walk through the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Along the way, they pass through locations that reflect the imagery of Wilhelm Müller’s poetry and Schubert’s music.

Christopher Dylan Herbert's Winterize:

The piano accompaniment was recorded by Timothy Long and reimagined by sound designer Jonathan Zalben. The production was directed by JJ Hudson. This year’s performance also featured twenty-four new, illustrated German-to-English supertitles by Italian artist Irene Rinaldi.

You can next see Herbert live with the Chamber Music Society in My Brother, Franz Schubert, which will be performed at Princeton on November 7 and Alice Tully Hall on November 8. On November 14, he rejoins New York Polyphony at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Times Square for Songs of Hope, featuring music by Andrew Smith, Francisco de Peñalosa, Cyrillus Kreek and Loyset Compère.

Barihunk Dan Kempson announces retirement

Dan Kempson in A Streetcar named Desire at Townsend Opera
Barihunk Dan Kempson, one of the most beautiful voices (and bodies) in the business, has announced his premature retirement from opera. Here is his announcement that he posted on Facebook.
This has been the worst kept "secret" of my life, but many of you know that I'm "retiring from the stage" after I finish out my gigs this season. I haven't done any auditions for about a year, allowing my calendar to run out. I'm doing this for a number of reasons, which range from the professional (wanting to impact the arts/entertainment industry in a way beyond performing) and the personal (I want to see my husband).I haven't said anything on Facebook because I didn't have the next step in place yet.

But, today I got the call! Starting next fall, I'll be getting my MBA at Columbia Business School! I'm excited and scared in equal measure. And I'm very relieved that I will get to sleep in my own bed, live in the same city as Zach, and go to school in Morningside Heights, my old MSM stomping grounds.
His remaining calendar includes Marcello in Puccini's La bohème with Madison Opera from November 13-15, Constellations at the Neighborhood House in Philadelphia in December, Ping in Puccini's Turandot with the Pacific Symphony in February 2016 and Marcello with the Bangor Symphony in April.

Michael Mayes as Wendell Swann in Great Scott
The Dallas Opera world premiere of Heggie's newest opera, Great Scott, with a libretto by Terrence McNally, is currently running through November 15th. The all-star cast includes Barihunks favorite Michael Mayes as Wendell Swann along with fellow barithunks Kevin Burdette and Nathan Gunn, who join Joyce DiDonato, Ailyn Pérez, Frederica von Stade, Anthony Roth Costanzo and Garrett Sorenson. The production is under the guidance of noted American director Jack O’Brien with choreography by John De Los Santos.

The story is about opera star Arden Scott, who returns to her hometown to save the struggling company that launched her career. The opening night performance of the long-lost opera she discovered falls on the same night as the home team’s first National Championship game. The fate of the company hangs in the balance as Arden discovers that greatness is truly a matter of heart.

We, of course, had to share these photos of Michael Mayes, who grew up in Cut and Shoot, Texas, where he played football. A football injury actually started his career trajectory in the world of opera. This performance marks his debut with the Dallas Opera. He's had great success 40 miles down the Tom Landry Highway at the Fort Worth Opera in Tom Cipullos'Glory Denied and Mark Adamo's Lysistrata

The production will next head to the San Diego Opera from May 7-15, 2016 with Isabel Leonard taking over the role of the diva from Joyce DiDonato. Additional information is available online.

He'll be singing highlights from a number of the Broadway shows that he's been performing recently, including selections from South Pacific, Les Misérables and Sweeney Todd.

The performance will be on Sunday,  November 15 at Melbourne's Elisabeth Murdoch Hall and tickets are available online. You can also visit the choir's website and learn how to pronounce Welsh, which is an adventure in itself.

The Melbourne Welsh Male Choir is a  group of singers who broke away from the Cantorian Cymraeg Choir who sing everything from African protest chants and rock songs to classical and religious music.

He'll be returning to the New Zealand Opera next season to sing Sweeney Todd.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky
Dmitri Hvorostovsky is back performing regularly after undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. He briefly returned to the stage on September 25, 29 and October 3 to sing some of his scheduled performances of Count di Luna in Verdi's Il trovatore at The Met. The outpouring of love for the Siberian barihunk has been universal, as he's been met with thunderous applause wherever he's gone and social media was filled with "get well" wishes.

On October 12, Russian president Vladimir Putin awarded him the Order of Alexander Nevsky, one of the country's highest honors.

On October 29th he made a triumphant return to the concert stage joined by mezzo Elīna Garanča at the Kremlin Palace. which they repeated on November 2. They sang selections from Carmen, Cavalleria Rusticana, Il trovatore, La favorita, The Merry Widow and Don Giovanni. You can watch the concert below. You won't want to miss his encore, which was so moving that Elīna Garanča had to wipe away her tears.

On November 18th, he joins fellow barihunk Ildar Abdrazakov at the Bashkir Opera. He returns to the stage on December 19, when he appears in the title role of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at the Royal Opera House in London.

He returns to the US stage on February 3rd as Count di Luna in Verdi's Il trovatore at the Metropolitan Opera. This is a reprise of the role he first performed after cancer treatment at The Met on September 25, 29 and October 3 of this year.
